Fractional charge and bulk-disclination correspondence

Perhaps, the most fundamental phenomenon in topological physics is the bulk-edge correspondence. Recent studies reveal that many topological crystalline materials such as higher-order topological insulators, however, do not exhibit bulk-edge correspondence and are hence difficult to identify in experiments. Here, we demonstrate that bulk-disclination correspondence, manifesting fractional charge at disclinations depending on the bull band topology, is a novel phenomenon which is useful in experimentally distinguish various topological crystalline phases. We create a photonic analog of topological crystalline insulators and measure the photonic fractional charge via the classical analog of the Purcell effect. Our study provides the first example of bulk-disclination correspondence and unveils a new horizon for the study of topological physics.

蒋建华教授,教育部青年长江学者,分别于2004年和2010年获中国科学技术大学学士和博士学位。先后在以色列Weizmann研究所和加拿大多伦多大学从事博士后研究。2015年起任苏州大学物理学院教授。发表 70余篇同行评审学术论文(含Nature, Nature Physics, PRL等)。2020年入选教育部长江学者奖励计划青年项目。担任“全国统计物理与复杂系统学术会议”学术委员会委员,“全国超材料大会”理事会理事,《Chinese Physics Letter》,《Chines Physics B》,《中国物理学报》和《物理》杂志青年编辑等学术兼职。
